FAQ

Do you provide services off the island?
Although Galveston Wood Windows focuses its services on The Beautiful and Historic Galveston Island, we do extend certain long-distance services.  Though we rarely travel off the island, we can ship our wood products to your location, wherever you may be.

Do you build frames and even full window units (frame and sashes)?
Yes we do.  Window frames can be made to exactly match any existing units in your building.  If your historic windows are no longer in place, we can recreate historically accurate windows based on the clues still there as well as the architectural period of your home.

Some of my windows and porch details are missing. Can you tell what was originally there?
By looking at the rest of your building, the surrounding structures in the neighborhood and also the ‘ghosts of the past’ (the tell-tale signs of removed details) we can often assess and then recreate historically accurate windows to restore the architectural beauty of your home.

Can you match my molding or trim?
Yes we can.  Sometimes we may need a sample piece to have knifes cut to exactly match your profile.

What type of wood do you use?
Although we can make windows and moldings out of most any species of wood, for sashes we like to use Cypress.  Cypress is lightweight and strong and has some natural rot and insect tolerance.  Window frames can be made out of a rot resistance species such as Spanish Cedar or Treated Pine.  Interior moldings can be made out of the species of your choice.  Exterior moldings are better to be made out of a rot resistance species such as Spanish Cedar or Treated Pine.

Do you install the windows?
This service is available at extra cost; typically billed time plus any needed materials.

How much does a window sash cost?
The costs of our services vary with the project. Contact us for details (but figure around $250 per sash, $1000 per full window unit).

How do I properly measure for a replacement sash?
First check to see that the window sill has not dropped down from its original position.   This can happen when water has penetrated where the sill joins the frame and has rusted the fasteners.  If it has, this will have to be addressed first before taking any measurements.  We can help you with the structural stabilization of the frame.

The sash opening width is measured between the frame side stiles.  Take measurements at the top, middle and bottom of the sash opening.  Record these measurements as the sash opening width.  The height is measured from the underside of the head casing of the frame to the sill at the outside of the lower sash channel (the inside edge of the parting bead). Again, take and record multiple measurements (left, center and right) for the sash opening height.

If you only need the upper sash:
Measure the sash opening width the same way as previously explained.

To measure for the height of an upper sash, with the lower sash seated in its proper place, take a measurement from the underside of the head casing of the window frame (where the new upper sash will be seated) down to the inside (bottom edge) of the lower sash meeting rail (where the glass meets the wood in the lower sash).  Take and record measurements on both sides for the needed upper sash.

Measure the sash opening width the same way as previously explained.

To measure for the height of a lower sash, with the upper sash seated in its proper place, take a measurement from the window sill at the outside of the lower sash channel (the inside edge of the parting bead, where the new lower sash will be seated) up to the inside (top edge) of the upper sash meeting rail (where the glass meets the wood in the upper sash).  Take and record measurements on both sides for the needed lower sash.
